What is leverage?
How margin lets you control a larger position than your deposit, and why it cuts both ways.

The mechanism
Leverage lets you open a position larger than the cash you commit. With 10:1 leverage, a 1,000 margin controls a 10,000 position. Profit and loss are calculated on the 10,000, so a 1% move in the asset is a 10% move on your margin.
Why it cuts both ways
The same multiplication applies to losses. That is why leverage and position sizing belong together: leverage decides how large a position you can open, while a sizing rule decides how large a position you should open.
