Oil eases on Hormuz hopes while yields hold near multi-year highs
Crude slides for a second session on reports of a phased US-Iran deal to reopen Hormuz, the 30-year Treasury yield sits at its highest since 2004, and a hawkish chorus of Fed and European central bankers keeps the dollar bid. Gold is stuck in the middle.

Surveys say boom, factories say stall: gold reclaims $4,400 after the Fed’s first hike since 2023
US manufacturing output fell 0.3% in August against a 0.3% expected gain, while the surveys still point to expansion. The Fed hiked into that gap on Wednesday, and gold is back at $4,400.
XAU/USD - Central banks
Central bank gold demand remains resilient
Central banks bought a net 23 tonnes of gold in July, led by China’s 21st straight month of purchases and Poland’s 90 tonnes year-to-date. Buying has slowed from a year ago, but the official sector still provides a structural floor – and a soft ADP print plus dovish Waller comments gave gold a 2% lift on Thursday.
XAU/USD - Middle East
Gold extends its decline as inflation and rate-hike risks intensify
A third straight session of losses takes gold to around $4,305 as renewed US-Iran strikes lift oil, markets price a near-70% chance of a September Fed hike and the 30-year Treasury yield climbs back above 5.28%. Safe-haven demand is not enough to offset the energy-driven inflation headwind.
