Hormuz: diplomacy without a deal
Qatari mediators offered a glimmer of diplomacy on Tuesday, but no agreement followed. President Trump denied reports that he was ready to grant Iran sanctions relief or release frozen funds in exchange for nuclear concessions, saying nothing has been offered, while Tehran says it remains ready to negotiate.
Brent reacted by pushing back above USD 103 in early trading before settling near USD 102.6, with WTI around USD 90. Brent is on track for roughly a 14% monthly gain, its best month since July. Trump speaks again at 21:30, so headline risk stays live into the evening.
Yanbu restart and Gulf exports recover
Saudi Arabia has restarted the East-West pipeline and tanker loadings at Yanbu on the Red Sea, delivering prompt barrels to refiners and easing part of the war-risk premium. Financial Times data put September exports of the six main Gulf producers near 15.5 million barrels a day, above 80% of pre-war levels, via alternative routes, ship-to-ship transfers and pipelines outside Hormuz.
The divergence matters: geopolitical rhetoric remains hot, but physical supply is less constrained than headlines imply. If this persists, oil can gradually lose risk premium, which would ease inflation pressure and, in turn, pressure on the Fed and on gold.
Williams, Core PCE and the yield wall
New York Fed President Williams said another hike may be needed this year but that there is no urgency after September’s move. Markets read it as mildly dovish: October hike odds fell from about 70% toward 50%.
Today’s data decide whether that holds. Core PCE is expected at 3.4% y/y and +0.3% m/m, alongside ADP employment and the final Q2 GDP reading (14:15–14:30), then Chicago PMI (15:45) and EIA inventories (16:30). Friday’s NFP may matter even more.
The 10-year Treasury closed near 5.256% (touching 5.293%), the 30-year sits near 5.6% and the 2-year near 4.92%. The 10-year TIPS real yield is around 2.85–2.90%, the highest since the financial crisis. A genuine bullish signal needs real yields falling: TIPS below 2.75% and the 10-year under 5.10%, then 5%. The DXY holds near 101.4, close to two-month highs.
ETF, central banks and physical demand
Equities are calm rather than panicked (S&P 500 −0.2%, Dow −0.3%, Nasdaq −0.1% on Tuesday), so gold lacks a classic safe-haven setup. World Gold Council data show about 1.6 tonnes of ETF outflows on the week, with holdings near 4,249 tonnes, while another source cites roughly USD 134 million of net inflows, with Europe resilient and outflows mostly from North America.
Central-bank buying remains the steadier pillar, driven by reserve diversification rather than daily yield moves. Chinese physical demand is weaker: local premiums fell to roughly zero ahead of Golden Week. The Reserve Bank of Australia hiked 25 bp to 4.60%, a 15-year high and its fourth hike this year, confirming that energy-driven inflation keeps central banks restrictive, a short-term headwind for gold.
Market impact — today’s trading-day summary
Spot gold trades near USD 4,179.70 per ounce and Brent near USD 102.59 per barrel.
| Level | Zone (USD) |
|---|---|
| Resistance 2 | 4,300 – 4,340 |
| Resistance 1 | 4,200 – 4,250 |
| Key pivot | 4,160 – 4,170 |
| Support 1 | 4,110 – 4,130 |
| Macro support | 4,050 / 4,000 |
Bias is neutral to mildly bearish. Tuesday’s rebound is real and the 4,110–4,130 area attracted buyers, but gold needs a break above 4,230–4,250 together with falling real yields before this counts as a confirmed reversal. Brent support sits at 101.50–102.50, with 104.50–106.00 above and 100 below.
Scenario odds: 30% bullish, 35% neutral, 35% bearish
