Gold extends its decline as inflation and rate-hike risks intensify
A third straight session of losses takes gold to around $4,305 as renewed US-Iran strikes lift oil, markets price a near-70% chance of a September Fed hike and the 30-year Treasury yield climbs back above 5.28%. Safe-haven demand is not enough to offset the energy-driven inflation headwind.

Third day of losses
Gold fell for a third consecutive session and is trading around $4,305/oz. The driver is the same on all three days: rising energy prices and increasingly hawkish Fed expectations have pushed bond yields and the dollar higher, and gold has struggled against both.
Oil is the problem
Renewed US-Iran strikes have driven oil prices sharply higher. In normal conditions a Middle East escalation would be a straightforward safe-haven bid for gold. This time the transmission runs the other way: higher energy costs raise the risk that inflation stays elevated, which in turn raises the risk that the Fed has to tighten further.
The Fed repricing
Following Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s hawkish inflation message, markets now price an almost 70% probability of a rate hike in September, alongside at least two more increases by March 2027. That is a sharp shift from the easing narrative that drove the August rally, and it removes the real-yield support gold enjoyed only a few weeks ago.
Long-end yields turn back up
The 30-year US Treasury yield climbed above 5.28%. This reverses the decline triggered by the Treasury’s expanded bond-buyback programme last month and shows that concerns over US debt and inflation have not gone away – they were only temporarily suppressed. A rising long end is a direct headwind for a non-yielding asset.
Outlook
Geopolitical uncertainty may still provide some safe-haven support and limit the downside. But as long as energy-driven inflation keeps the Fed hawkish and Treasury yields rising, those two forces are likely to remain the dominant headwinds for gold. Until the oil price or the rate path changes, rallies are more likely to be sold than bought.
